What can we really learn by comparing public transport across cities?

UITP’s new Global Urban Mobility Indicators report brings together 33 indicators from 53 cities worldwide. It covers everything from network length and fleet size to ridership.

One figure immediately stands out: in 2024, the report recorded 749 public transport journeys per resident in Prague, compared with 209 in Amsterdam and 104 in Dubai.

But the most useful question is not which city ranks highest. It is what sits behind the numbers. Cities differ in their transport networks, service areas and ways of counting passengers. UITP addresses this by using shared definitions and adjusting selected indicators for population size, while also noting where data remains incomplete.

At Zight, we see this as the foundation of useful transit analytics: clear KPI definitions, reliable data and the context to turn comparisons into better decisions.

Which indicator would help you understand your city’s public transport performance?
